Our Journey in Botswana

When it was licensed on the 29th March 1998, Mascom promised to have the network on the air to coincide with the then US President Bill Clinton's visit to Botswana, introducing the network with anticipation for continuous success.
Mascom has maintained the tradition and introduced cutting edge innovative products and services. The following year Mascom spread its wings to introduce international roaming and launched SMS (Short Message System) in 2000. Kwik - recharge which is the most technologically advanced method of recharging through cellphone was launched in 2003.
In 2004 Mascom was the only Mobile operator in Botswana to be ISO Complaint; these international standards were qualified once again in 2006 with the Environmental Management System: ISO 140001:2004 certification and ISO 9001:2000 Certification. In the same year cellphone banking was launched, another Mascom’s commitment to service excellence and convenience to our customers.
2007 saw the introduction of GPRS/EDGE network coverage that spans 95% of the population. Mascom was the first mobile operator to launch 3G/HSDPA covering the cities of Gaborone in 2008 and Francistown in 2009.
In June 2012, Mascom announced the aggressive expansion of 3.5G technology, which upon completion will see close to 80% of Botswana’s population enjoying the benefits of super-fast broadband access, with speeds of up to 21 Mbps. Concurrent to the 3.5G deployment, the 2.5G network was also upgraded to increase capacity by over 50%. At the same time Mascom launched the 4G LTE pilot project which positioned Mascom among the first in the SADC region to announce the advanced technology.
On the same year, Mascom launched the Mascom Innovation Centre, a state of the art building that hosts the Data centre which is the hub of the Mascom network country wide and the Energy Centre which deploys ultimate redundancy and ensures service continuity. The architecture of the Innovation Centre reflects the company’s drive towards innovation in the cellular communications field. The centre will increase ICT knowledge and serve as a platform to allow citizens to have access to cutting edge telecommunication technology.

COME TO BOTSWANA!!!

Tourist relaxing on the Okavango Delta
It could be YOU!!!
come to Botswana!

Botswana is a land-locked nation centred in Sub-Saharan Africa with an impressive biodiversity comprised of both desert (the Kgalagadi / Kalahari of central and western districts) and wetlands (the Okavango Delta and Chobe region of the north). This region of 600,370 km2 is encircled by the neighbouring nations of Namibia to the west, Zambia to the north, Zimbabwe to the east, and South Africa to the south.
Botswana's terrain is predominantly flat with gently rolling hills and occasionally rocky tablelands, its highest point reached at the Tsodilo Hills (1,489 m). The country's climate is semiarid, and the Kalahari Desert is, thus, characterized by plentiful bush flora and fauna.
As in all of Africa, land sustains life. Botswana's natural resources - diamonds, copper, nickel, salt, soda ash, potash, coal, iron ore and silver - generate much national revenue, particularly in the diamond mining industry. Cattle-rearing is the most significant agricultural enterprise. Small farmers rely on cattle, goats, sheep, maize, sorghum, beans, peanuts, cottonseed and other dry land crops. Beef exports to Europe represent Botswana's second largest income generator, and the booming tourism industry, currently third, may soon overtake the beef industry as the nation seeks to diversify its economy.

University of Botswana: Faculty of Business

The Faculty of Business was established in 1997 following the reorganisation of the School of Accounting and Management Studies (SAMS) under the Faculty of Social Sciences. The need to establish an independent faculty was primarily driven by increasing numbers of students who showed an interest in business programmes. Under the umbrella of this new faculty, three departments were created to offer specialism in management, marketing, and accounting and finance. The most popular of these is the Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc) program, which trains students for a professional level accounting certification exams, most notably the ACCA. Many graduates have integrated this degree into tracks such as becoming American CPA's or members of the UK's CIMA. The faculty offers five degrees:
  • Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc)
  • Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Management
  • Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Marketing
  • Bachelor of Information Systems (BIS)
  • Bachelor of Finance
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta offers probably the most pristine, the highest quality and the highest priced safari in Africa.

Originating in the distant highlands of Angola, the Okavango floodwater actually arrives into the delta during the dry season, May/Oct, causing prodigious quantities of game to migrate inwards from the otherwise parched Kalahari desert. At this time there is no better game-viewing in Africa. Even during the converse season the quality remains well above that of most other areas.

Almost all of Okavango is divided into vast private concessions, where visitor numbers are strictly limited and the camps can generally only be accessed by light aircraft.

The Baobab Tree

Baobab is the common name of a genus of trees (Adansonia). There are eight species, six native to Madagascar, and one each to mainland Africa and Australia. It is the national tree of Madagascar.

In Botswana baobab trees grow mainly in the Northern district  and serve as a major tourist attraction as they are rare and amazing. The Baobab Tree is known as the tree of life, with good reason. It can provide shelter, clothing, food, and water for the animal and human inhabitants of the African savannah regions.

The cork-like bark and huge stem are fire resistant and are used for making cloth and rope. The leaves are used as condiments and medicines. The fruit, called "monkey bread", is edible, and full of Vitamin C. As of 2010 experts estimate the potential international market at a billion dollars($US) a year.

Photographers from all around the world travel to the savannah habitats of Africa to take photos of these enormous trees as they also very beautiful in print.
